Fly Fishing & Fly Tying Magazine Review
Most fishing videos and DVD's boast highly qualified casting and/or fishing instructors, professional guides or expert anglers who have held a rod since shortly after creation. Tony Jay takes a rather refreshing approach when he confides that he's only fished for seven years. So, this is an introduction to fly fishing by a relative novice? Well...no! This is an introduction to fly fishing by someone who took up the sport as an adult. He became passionate about the sport, and like so many mature newcomers he learned quickly and became more than a little obsessed.
We make much of recruiting young anglers into fishing, and undoubtedly this is important, but we probably pay less attention to the majority of the new recruits, who take up fly fishing as adults.
Beyond The Rise works at a gentle pace; Tony talks about why he loves fly fishing, his delight in the countryside, the adrenalin rush as a fish takes, the pleasure he derives from catching wild fish on flies of his own making. then, in clear simple steps presents the tackle and a taster of tying which the novice fly fisherman needs to get started (in plain English with a few technical terms along the way.)
Tackle is simple. He ties a couple of useful trout flies. He lists and explains the essential bits and pieces he takes when fishing. Thew tools he needs for tying. Then goes fishing on a small lake and a few small rain fed streams-his fishing days seem short, all savoured as fishing days-a few fish-or not!
Image and sound quality are very good, filming and editing is simple and effective. Tony Jay presents clearly and at times perhaps a little too carefully, his charm and enthusiasm shine. The information is enough to get started, nothing too pedantic or specific. Beyond The Rise is a brief encouragement to get out and fish, if you know an adult and want to make UK fly fishing seem accessible and enjoyable this is a great place to start.

Wild Trout Trust - Summer Newsletter 2007
Beyond the Rise
Your editor has been privileged to attend a preview of a new video/DVD produced by Jaypark Productions. This is one mans approach to many of the aspects of flyfishing on small streams for wild brown trout and the associated activities.
The approach is individualistic but the personal tone used by the presenter gives the feeling that one is having a conversation with a friend rather that attending a lecture. There is much for the beginner: rods, lines, leaders and ancillary kit are covered but not in the kind of detail that would bore the established fisherman. Fly dressing is demonstrated: some of the techniques used were new to me and they will be of interest to both novices and experienced tyers, in common with Delia Smiths recipes, it is not always what one would expect but it is easy to follow and it does work.
The photography is excellent; full of beautiful scenery and wildlife and mercifully free of the gimmicky effects that so many TV programmes seem to feel obliged to use. The greatest pleasure for me is that every (wild) trout caught was treated gently, carefully and returned promptly to the water. Every fish swam away vigorously, without any evidence of ill effects.
This is a must-buy for everyone interested in wild trout in small streams in wild country. "Beyond the Rise" will be released about mid-August. We will try to keep members informed via this newsletter and our website.
